College Counseling Services

Comprehensive College Counseling Services

From the initial meeting to the day you select your college, we will support your college-bound student every step of the way and assist them with every possible aspect of the college choice process. We are experts at helping average-achieving college-bound students explore their college options and select the right college. Many average achievers do not receive the personalized attention needed to explore the amazing colleges options available to them. To help this population make smart college choices we provide the following services:

  • Initial Consultation: We will establish expectations and begin the journey of understanding each student's uniqueness and their environment.
  • Transcript and Extra-curricular Activity Analysis: We will evaluate each students' transcripts to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Identifying strengths and weaknesses allow us to craft strategies that help students exploit opportunities and spotlight their growth and maturity.
  • One-Year/Two-Year Plan Review: After a thorough assessment of the student and their environment, we will create and review their college choice plan. Their plan will be flexible, allowing the student to make adjustments as needed.
  • Individualized Attention: We will provide unlimited assistance during the student’s junior and senior years in high school. This includes assistance with the following:
    • Standardized testing strategies: We will help students maximize their test taking success. Will the SAT or ACT be a better fit? Should the student focus on test-optional institutions? When is the best time to take the test. Also, we will help the student stay on track so that they can test the test more than once, if necessary.
    • College selection and application strategies
    • Essay and short answer assistance
    • Interview coaching
    • Financial aid and scholarship assistance
    • Waitlist/deferral strategies
    • Coaching on transitioning from high school to college
  • Additional services provided based on specific needs

    BLMHTX

In the wake of recent violence and brutality against black lives that continues to sweep the nation, BLMHTX formed as a locally-based, and Houston-founded, activist organization and collective of researchers, activists, artists, religious leaders, and community organizers that aims to educate, empower, and build coalition in order to address issues that impact black lives in the city of Houston.

Our mission is to spark critical visions of a world where black lives matter while working toward making this a concrete reality here in Houston. In all of our work, we emphasize three core tenets: creative imagination, critical dialogue, and coalition building--all in the pursuit of intersectional social justice.

BLMHTX employs an Ella Baker model of community organizing, a model which brings people together for sustained and coordinated strategic action for social justice. As such, in addition to direct actions and political engagement with local civic leaders, we are committed to building community through programming, trainings, community meetings, and conferences that combine critical dialogue and the arts in ways that creatively highlight and confront issues of racism and social injustice. These community building efforts are central to our aim of curating spaces for disparate members of the Houston community to collaborate, come together, and think about how to contribute to the valuing of black lives through their own areas of interest and influence.
